A presentation exploring the motivation and process behind some of the most iconic and engaging street by Plastic Jesus.

Introduction

Plastic Jesus is an internationally-renowned street artist. The work he installs in public spaces throughout the world often carries trenchant political commentary regarding current affairs and cultural happenings.

Due to the transient nature of renegade street art, stumbling upon his work in person is a rarity. However, in the digital space of social and mainstream media, the impact of his incisive and wickedly humorous perspective lives on, sparking debates on issues including: politics, crime, the war on drugs, firearms, immigration, the cult of celebrity and consumerism.

In July 2016 his self-sanctioned street installation of a mini wall encircling Donald Trump’s Hollywood walk of fame star went viral. It became the most read and shared news story on the BBC News website for that week!

Background

From an early age Plastic Jesus has eschewed the expectations put on him, choosing to forge his own way in life instead. For instance, he never completed his school exams and dropped out at aged 15 due to overwhelming boredom! What he lacked in traditional academic training he made up for in passion for visual story telling and, as a result, soon became a leading news photographer. With a career that spanned over 20 years, taking him to every corner of the globe covering war, earthquakes, people trafficking, drug smuggling and organized crime, his photographs have been published though-out the world in publications including The Times, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and many more . During this time he developed and perfected the strategies of visual storytelling.

Street art

Plastic Jesus started producing street art as a means to bring messages and issues that he felt were being ignored by the mainstream media to the public. His aim was to be a catalyst sparking dialog and agenting change.

The artist’s ability to communicate nuanced messages using visually accessible language has garnered him recognition around the world. Among his most iconic installations are: the cocaine snorting Academy Award statue, the ‘Best Buy useless plastic box’, the “No Kardashian Parking” signs and now the wall surrounding ‘Donald Trump’s Hollywood walk of fame star'.
